Annual Conference Highlights

The 2011 ASPR Annual Conference in Chicago, IL was an overwhelming success! We had approximately 470 attendees and more than 250 exhibitor representatives – our largest conference in ASPR history! Thank you to all of you who were able to attend!

Monday morning began with the keynote speaker, Scott Schwefel, from Insights Learning & Development, who delivered a thought provoking and humorous presentation titled “Insights into Personal Effectiveness”. This presentation discussed four “energies” that all people contain within themselves that define how we communicate with others and how we prefer others to communicate with us. Those that lead with Red Energy prefer people to: “Be Bright, Be Brief, and Be Gone”; those leading with Blue Energy have the motto “Give Me Details”; those leading with Yellow Energy’s motto is “Involve Me”, and those leading with Green Energy “Show Me You Care”. Which Energy do you lead with?

Monday morning also included a plenary session called “Perspectives - A Physician’s View of Landing that Dream Opportunity”. The plenary session included seven physicians at various stages of their careers. Discussions included best practices for recruitment and retention of physicians which covered their job search tactics, interview experiences, and onboarding and retention programs that work (or don’t work). The afternoon offered two sessions including three breakout topics each and AIR sponsored a session titled “The Impact of the Changing Healthcare Environment on Medical Schools, Residents & Training Programs - What is the Skill Set for the Future?” presented by Joanne M. Conroy, M.D., Chief Health Care Officer, of the Association of American Medical Colleges. The day culminated with an amazing social event at the House of Blues where attendees, sponsors, and exhibitors danced the night away to music by The Fundamentals.

Tuesday began with some networking roundtable discussions on various topics (for the early risers!), followed by a captivating plenary session titled, ”Physician Supply, Demand: The Next Decade.” Presenters included Scott Shipman, MD from the Dartmouth Hitchcock School of Medicine, Roderick Hooker, PhD, PA from The Lewin Group, and Fred Donini-Lenhoff from the American Medical Association. The panel discussed how the supply and demand of medical personnel is changing, which in turn is impacting access to care. Statistics were shared showing the exponential growth of Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner programs over the last 40 years, while medical school and residency programs have remained stagnant. A heavier reliance on advanced practice providers is inevitable.

The remainder of Tuesday included the ASPR Annual Business Meeting where Scott Manning, FASPR, President and Jennifer Metivier, FASPR, Executive Director, provided key annual highlights on programs and activities accomplished by the Board of Directors and Committees. Board Members, Committee Co-Chairs, and Committee members were recognized for their hard work and dedication and outgoing Chairs, Laura Screeney, FASPR and Dennis Burns were presented with Outstanding Service Awards for their many years of dedicated service to ASPR on the Journal and Regional Relations Committees respectively. Newly certified Fellows were also recognized for their accomplishment. ASPR Corporate Contributors were presented plaques to recognize them for the support that they provide to our association.

Tuesday also included three sessions of breakout topics with a total of nine topics for attendees to choose from. Each session was one of three distinct Learning Tracks: “The WOW Factor: Marketing & Sourcing That Sets You Apart”, “Let’s Make a Deal: Employment Models & Today’s Trends Track”, and “Adding Value: Other Duties as Assigned”. A total of 15 topics were offered through these Learning Tracks, the most that ASPR has ever offered at an Annual Conference.

Many attendees also attended the ASPR Fellowship Program Modules while in Chicago. A record-breaking number of people attended the Physician Recruitment 101, 201, and 301 modules. These modules and subsequent exams lead members to become certified as Fellows of the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (FASPR).

An enormous thank you goes out to the ASPR Education Committee Co-Chairs, Allen Kram, from HealthQuest (LaGrangeville, NY) and Marlene Yates, from Cone Health (Greensboro, NC) for orchestrating such an amazing conference! A huge thank you also goes out to the entire Education Committee including Jennifer Barber, Lauren Beckstrom, Judy Brown, Nikki Conforti, Debbie Gleason, Marci Jackson, Mary Lu Leatherman, Scott Manning, Carol Rash, Emily Glaccum, Carol Kamenar, Courtney Kammer, Lee Meyer, Tonya Pehle, Rachel Reliford, Melody Roccaforte, and Denise Siemers. The teamwork of this amazing group of people is greatly appreciated by all who attended the conference! Thank you!

Mark your calendars for the ASPR 19th Annual Conference which will be held August 12-15, 2012 at the JW Marriott at LA Live in Los Angeles, CA. We hope to see you in LA!
