Program Overview

  1. Discuss the taxability, deductibility and excludability of moving expenses, and help the doctor understand company policy – explain highlights, and address gross-up related questions.
  2. Highlight the differences between the old “live state” and “work state” tax laws while then addressing the new “live state” and “work state” tax laws.
  3. Present issues and guidance regarding renting the previous house, selling the previous house, and potentially renting or buying a house in the new location.
  4. Address the timing of capital gains & losses, potential home sale credit repayment issues, and stock options.
  5. A discussion on charitable contributions – keeping non-cash receipts and the $5,000 threshold. Addressing the potential sales tax deduction vs. the state income tax deduction.
  6. Review the timing of switchover of state withholding, relative to beginning work in new state.
  7. Address the potential impact of spouses in two different states, as well as potential residency and tax filing issues.
  8. Discuss Schedule C/LLC issues – registering in new state, cutoff of records at move date.
  9. Review assignment type (Short Term/Commuter) vs. actual relocation (if applicable).
  10. Explain the personal income tax preparation process and how to stay in compliance.
  11. Discuss withholding allowances for federal and state taxes. The number of exemptions may need to be decreased mainly because the employee’s salary usually increases due to relocation or other income factors.
  12. Guidance to address domestic partner issues and community property states.

Presenter Bio

David S. Oltman, CRP, Chief Compliance Officer, Ineo/Relocation Taxes, LLC


 David S. Oltman, CRP is the Chief Compliance Officer at Ineo and Relocation Taxes (ReloTax). He is a co-founder of ReloTax and The Hessel Group, located in Wilton, CT. David has over 30 years of experience in the relocation and payroll industry and was the former director of relocation at Ciba-Geigy / Novartis Corporation. David was the system architect for the former DRTS systems. He is a highly sought after national speaker in both the Payroll and Human Resources industry. He has spoken at ADP’s Meeting of the Minds and Ceridians’s INSIGHTS national conferences and was rated the “top” speaker at both. He is an ERC Meritorious Service Award winner. David received his BBA in Human Resources and his MBA in Finance and Taxation. David’s license plate tag on his car for the past 30+ years has been GROSS-UP. 

David has been married for 35 years and has three children. He lives in the small town of Katonah, NY home of Martha Stewart which just about 50 minutes from New York City.
