With student loan debt for physicians often surpassing $250,000 it’s no surprise that both physician recruiters and early career physicians want more education on student loan repayment options.
To recruit the best and brightest candidates for academic hospitals and clinics has become extremely challenging because of the increasingly heavy student loan debt many early career physicians carry. Recruiters feel frustration when they are unable to compete with advantages that other employers are able to offer such as higher compensation and signing bonuses and end up losing physician candidates. They seek to level the playing field.
At the same time early career physicians with burdensome student loan debt feel pressure when it comes to accepting job offers that will determine where they will begin their career. I have talked with many new physicians who receive multiple job offers and feel forced by financial circumstances to pass over a preferred position in consideration of how best to pay off their student loan debt. However, for physicians practicing at nonprofit and public organizations, there is a solution to this troublesome dilemma.
Education on loan repayment plans is the key that enables physician recruiters to secure the candidates they want for their institutions and to support retention efforts. While student loan forgiveness programs are not “one size fits all,” there is one widely-used but often overlooked source for student loan debt relief that offers advantages both for physician recruiters and for early career physicians: Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
