Member profile: Kay Wysong
You may recognize Kay’s name from some of the recent communications about the new ASPR Chapter – Texas Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (TexASPR). Kay recently began her term as President of this newly formed chapter. TexASPR became an official ASPR Chapter January 1, 2014, and will have its first Chapter meeting at the ASPR Annual Conference in August. When asked about her new role, Kay says, "The Officers and Steering Committee of the TexASPR are amazing and I am humbled by their enthusiasm to bring us together to assist one another.”
Kay has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with a major in Social Services and Sociology. She never knew what she wanted to do professionally, but did not want to be a secretary or a teacher like many of her friends. Fortunately for ASPR, life eventually led her to health care recruiting and she’s had a terrific career. Kay’s been working in the field since 1985 when she took on the role of Physician Recruiter for the Republic Health Hospital System in Dallas, Texas. In October 2007, she took on a new challenge and joined The Methodist Health System – a system comprised of eight thriving Medical Centers serving the Dallas and Fort Worth Metroplex. Kay is currently the Director of Physician Recruiting for Primary Care Specialties; she has the difficult job of recruiting primary care physicians for the Methodist Med+Health physician employment organization, for private practices associated with the Methodist Health System, and for the Physician Association of Southwest Dallas (the resident faculty group).
In her role, Kay sources candidates, arranges interviews, attends job fairs, follows up with candidates, completes reference checks, answer questions and keeps her fingers crossed that candidates accept the offers being made. Since her organization also has residency programs, she and her colleague provide an annual program called PREP, "Preparing Residents for Establishing Practices.” This free program provided by Methodist is open to all residents - both primary and specialty care - in the State of Texas. Kay also presents a program to Methodist residents about "Finding Your First Practice Opportunity.”
With the proliferation of free standing Emergency Rooms and Urgent Care Centers in the Metroplex, Kay finds the pool of Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physician candidates who want to go into private practice is getting even tighter. She is experiencing the shortage firsthand, "Finding an outpatient Internist has been especially challenging in the last few years. Also, finding any candidate who will consider going into a practice that is supported by an income guarantee is quite difficult.” She can attest to the trend where candidates prefer to work as an employee of a health care system because they perceive that relationship as more stable than an individual private practice.
Fortunately, Kay has found being a member of ASPR has helped her immensely in dealing with the day-to-day challenges she faces. "Physician recruiting isn’t a profession one can obtain a degree in by attending college or graduate school. By being a member of ASPR, I learn new processes and ideas from my professional peers. These add to my ability to do a better job every day. I especially like to attend the national meetings, meet people I have only corresponded with and get to know the exhibitors who provide a great foundation for our organization.”
Kay is thrilled that she found her way into physician recruiting. She loves meeting and talking with some of the brightest individuals from all over the country and around the world and enjoys learning about different cultures. She gets the most satisfaction from knowing that she is bringing small businesses - which every physician in practice is - to the communities she serves. Kay is happy to share her motto with new physician recruiters, "Let It Go! When life gives you detours, just try to enjoy the scenery on your way because you will not get that moment back. Every day we are on this planet is special and I try to stay in the moment.”
Website transition: Registration for future webinars is on hold
Have you seen the great webinar topics and speakers we have lined up for June through November? Have you tried to register for them but discovered that registration isn’t open yet?
As we go through our website transition, we will be transferring our entire database to the new platform. This means all member information, event registrations, CEU credits, etc. will be moving from the current database to the new one. To minimize the loss of data, registration for webinars scheduled between June and November will be on hold until the new website goes live.

Unethical behavior of vendors: What you can do
Have you encountered unethical behaviors with a vendor? If the vendor does business with ASPR as an exhibitor, sponsor, advertiser or Corporate Contributor, there may be something that we can do to address the situation. ASPR's Ethics Committee is tasked with addressing unethical behaviors of ASPR vendors based on the ASPR Vendor Ethics Policy.
The ASPR Vendor Ethics Policy sets expectations and standards for Vendor Partners doing business with ASPR. ASPR expects each of its Vendor Partners to operate and act in full compliance with this Ethics Policy and all applicable laws and regulations.
The ASPR Ethics Committee has received and addressed two complaints since its inception, both regarding Vendor Partners’ staff representing themselves as physicians (or a dentist in one case) in provider databases. Both Vendor Partners received warnings and have assured ASPR that this type of behavior is considered unacceptable within their organizations and will not occur again.
If a Vendor Partner is found to have consistently violated the policy or found to have made an egregious violation, they could lose their ability to conduct business with ASPR. That means they may no longer be able to exhibit at the Annual Conference, advertise, or participate in the Corporate Contributor program.
If you encounter unethical behavior of a Vendor Partner, ASPR encourages you to first attempt to resolve your concern directly with the vendor prior to submitting a complaint to the ASPR Ethics Committee. If a satisfactory resolution is not obtained, a formal complaint may be filed with the ASPR Ethics Committee. ASPR Members, or anyone with information relevant to a possible violation of this policy, may file a complaint with the Ethics Committee by completing a Vendor Ethics Violation Form.
