As the number of employed physicians grows, so does the need for them to take on new leadership roles. Doctors bring many talents to these leadership roles. They are inevitably intelligent, articulate, analytical, thoughtful decision makers. However, most have had no preparation for the tasks that must be performed by today’s healthcare leaders. They need to be able to hire, evaluate, coach, and reward both staff and other doctors amid a thicket of regulation and oversight that determine the hospital’s or system’s success.
Both internal and external programs are springing up to help physicians develop the managerial skills and hone the leadership competencies they need in today’s competitive market. This webinar will discuss the kind of skills required and the various options that organizations are considering as they assist physicians in their development.
Laura Avakian, author of Helping Physicians Become Great Managers and Leaders (AHA Press), and former Sr. Vice President for Human Resources for Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, will share her insights regarding the kinds of programs and assistance healthcare organizations can provide to develop physicians become highly effective leaders.
2013 ASPR Benchmarking Survey: Changes to “Expenses”
The 2013 ASPR In-House Physician Recruitment Benchmarking Survey will open in January 2013. The Benchmarking Committee has overhauled the Expense information for the 2013 Survey. The changes made will allow recruiters to enter information directly from their recruitment budget which will make data entry easier. The changes will also provide an accurate reflection of total recruitment costs and will provide information on the cost to operate an entire recruitment department.
The 2013 Survey will no longer collect expense data for individual searches, but will collect data based on total annual expenses. The data will be captured in four categories:
- Annual Recruitment Budget
- Candidate Expenses (Actual)
- Marketing Expenses (Actual)
- Departmental Expenses (Actual)
The following will provide you with more details on which expenses will fall into each of these categories:
Annual Recruitment Budget
Total amount budgeted (not actual costs) for the entire recruitment department. Sum should not include any items in the exclusion list.
Total costs incurred during the year that are specific to the recruitment of individual candidates. Examples include:
- Car rental/Ground Transportation
- Gifts & gift baskets
- Locums fees incurred until permanent placement is secured.
- Community Tours/Realtor Fees
- Background checks
- Search Firm Fees: Separate line item but reported in Candidate Expenses
Total costs incurred during the year related to the marketing of open opportunities or recruitment services. Examples include:
- Job fairs and exhibits
- Collateral material
- Direct Mail: (Brochures, Postcards, Flyers)
- Postage/Shipping/Courier fees (marketing-specific)
- Journal postings
- Online job boards
- Database fees
- Web Development / maintenance
Total costs incurred during the year that are specifically to run an in-house recruitment department. Examples include:
- Legal fees
- Educational: (Professional dues, subscriptions, training, and related travel)
- Recruiter tuition reimbursement
- Minor equipment
- Office Equipment and Leases: (Telephones, Computers, Faxes, Copiers)
- Tracking systems
- Compensation Surveys
- Reference books
- Office supplies (paper, folders, pens, ink, printed forms, etc.)
- Postage/Shipping/Courier fees (department specific)
- Maintenance & Repairs
- IT Services
- Other overhead
Candidate expenses do not include the cost of provider salary, signing bonuses, relocation expenses, tuition reimbursement, or other benefits paid out to the provider after the offer was accepted.
Departmental expenses should not include salary, benefits, insurance disability, pension, and/or other wages.
