Collaboration nation: ASPR Chapter and Regional Relations Committee update

The goal of the ASPR Chapter and Regional Relations Committee is to support the development of ASPR chapters and special interest groups and to enhance communication between and among regional recruitment groups and ASPR. Our main focus is to assist members who wish to start a regionally-based chapter or convert their existing regional group to chapter status. By doing so, members will receive added benefits by becoming officially sanctioned chapters of ASPR. Thirteen regional groups exist throughout the country, with varying levels of size, activity and success. Even though they have frequent communication, all remain independent of ASPR. Most experience the same challenges, as all are led by volunteers. Now, more than ever, groups can be difficult to sustain due to increasing professional and personal commitments; however, all share a mission to support members in order to achieve professional success through communication, networking, referrals, and education.
Currently there are three ASPR chapters, two that are just newly formed. Chapter status has been officially granted to:
Academic In-house Recruiters (AIR)
Onboarding and Retention (OAR)
Southeast Physician Recruiters Association (SEPRA)
ASPR chapters are affiliated with ASPR but operate independently with their own officers, bylaws and incorporation. The Children’s Hospital In-house Recruiter Network (CHIRN) is a special interest group of ASPR members. To join either a special interest group or a chapter of ASPR, you must be an ASPR member.

Committee highlights for 2012
All regional groups were surveyed to determine their level of awareness of chapter benefits and interest in becoming an ASPR chapter.
The committee met with select regional groups at the 2012 ASPR Annual Conference in Los Angeles to assist with the conversion to chapter status.
The committee assisted both OAR and SEPRA with their development and conversion to ASPR chapters.
The committee consulted with other regional groups to assist them in evaluating whether becoming a chapter would be beneficial to them. One common area of concern is how to convert to chapter status without losing regional group members. Currently, there are regional group members who are not ASPR members due primarily to budgetary limitations. The committee is working hard to provide some creative solutions to this problem. There is tremendous value in being a member of both ASPR and a chapter. Chapter members receive a $50 discount on ASPR dues and continuing education opportunities in collaboration with ASPR. In addition, the chapter receives many benefits as a whole — such as assistance with marketing, streamlined collection of membership dues (both chapter and ASPR dues are collected together), financial assistance with legal fees for incorporation, and guidance through the processes required to become a chapter.
Special recognition goes to the dedicated and talented committee members who represent many of the regional groups and chapters throughout the nation. The Chapter and Regional Relations Committee is chaired by Chris Kashnig, FASPR, CMSR and Lori Pinkerton, CMSR and supported by Frank Gallagher, ASPR board liaison and past committee chairman.
