In memoriam: Bill Norris, ASPR Founding Member - Fall 2017

William “Bill” Norris, a founding member of ASPR, died July 23, 2017, in the presence of family and friends. Bill was born on June 8, 1947, in Washington, DC. A Vietnam era US Navy veteran, Bill moved to his beloved New Mexico in 1980, where he served as a physician recruiter and hospital administrator.

Few knew the nooks and crannies of New Mexico like Bill, who logged over one million miles as the Director of Recruitment for Presbyterian Hospital, while enticing and inspiring adventurous medical experts to serve its remotest regions. For his candidates, Bill’s encyclopedic knowledge of the state transformed long drives on desolate roads into exciting forays into history. For friends and family who ventured into the unknown, a phone call to Bill would lead to the best local food and coldest beer.

Bill was a pioneer in the physician recruitment industry. A founding member of the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters in 1990, Bill helped set the tone for the organization with a focus on education and mentorship in the industry. A mentor to many, Bill developed a close network of friends in the industry across the country. His legacy and influence in the physician recruitment community will live on through the physician recruitment professionals who transform health care in their communities every day.

A member of the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame, Bill rode his Ultra Classic Harley Davidson to the annual induction ceremony in San Antonio, Texas to participate in the ceremony honoring the class of 2017. While working out with his long-time colleagues, under the tutelage of their instructor, Grand Master Austin Box, Bill’s heart failed. All who knew and loved Bill may take solace that were he to script his final days on earth, Bill Norris would have written it just as it happened.

Bill’s memorial service was held in Albuquerque September 10 at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park in Albuquerque, and followed by a ceremonial motorcycle ride. On behalf of Bill’s family, please accept our deep appreciation for your love, prayers, and support. Donations in memory of Bill may be sent to the Colfax Healthcare Foundation, 615 Prospect Avenue, Springer, NM 87747.
