President's Corner - Fall 2017

By Frank Gallagher, Director of Provider Recruitment, AtlantiCare

Frank Gallagher

As I sit here on a beautiful, sunny summer day along the New Jersey shore I’m reminded of how quickly time goes by. I realize that these long, sun-drenched days will soon give way to cooler temperatures, falling leaves and the start of another school year (making my wife happy). And yes, the start of another college football season always makes me happy. But more importantly, this time of year is a sure reminder that a new, busy recruitment season will soon be upon us, filled with enhanced sourcing and outreach activities, project deadlines, ongoing candidate visits, and contract negotiations. And while most of us realize there is no true “off-season” for provider recruitment, I still attempt each summer to take a break and reflect a bit on any successes (and missteps) that occurred during the past year in an attempt to start anew and improve anticipation of the upcoming recruitment cycle.

This same “reflect and renew” approach holds true as I think about all that’s occurred during the past year (and all the work that needs to be done) across ASPR. I feel a tremendous amount of pride as I recall another successful annual conference in San Diego, the addition of two new board members, Bruce Guyant and Aisha DiBerry, along with this publication’s new editor, Cecilia Jerome. I’m also thankful for each of our new committee chairs, which are listed below.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Carey Goryl, we welcomed another talented association management professional, Susan Motley, to the ASPR team as deputy director. At the same time, our board of directors implemented a restructuring around the critical area of governance which further clarified the accountabilities, decision-making parameters and boundaries for board members, committees, and association management staff, all of whom are working together for a common purpose.

Additionally, the board approved our association’s first formal strategic plan prompting each committee to begin the important work around annual goal implementation and roll out. All of these critical milestones are intended, of course, to benefit all of us as members and better position ASPR in the future as we all move forward together in this ever-changing healthcare landscape. A few obvious examples of change include the increase in hospital/health system consolidations and mergers, legislative uncertainty (Medicaid expansion predictions, anyone?) and the ongoing provider shortage, just to name a few. All of these issues, of course, will continue to challenge us collectively as a professional association and as individual leaders within our own organizations.

In response, I’ll remain on my constant journey to find new ways, both professionally and personally, to stay focused, productive and organized. For me, this means I’ll do my best to continue to wake up early, establish consistent routines, set daily and weekly priorities, utilize and follow structured meeting agendas, stay on time and chunk out appointment time on my calendar according to work themes – with thanks to a former colleague for the use of color codes. Most importantly, I look forward to continuing to learn from all of you. Got any new ideas?
