President's Corner

By Scott Manning, FASPR, ASPR President

Scott ManningWell, another year has come and gone and it is time for the 2011 ASPR Annual Conference. This year’s conference is being held in Chicago, Illinois from August 14 to 17, 2011. The theme for this year’s event is “Winds of Change: Impacting the Recruitment Landscape.” Each year I am amazed at the dedication of our ASPR Education Committee and the fact they continue to improve the conference every year. This year’s Education Committee is led by Co-Chairs Marlene Yates and Allen Kram who, along with their committee members, have hit the proverbial “grand slam.” The slate of speakers and topics is exceptional and should provide something for everyone. This year is a first in that ASPR put out a public call for speakers to ensure we continue to diversify topics and speakers, allowing for the highest quality conference experience. This was an overwhelming success as we had more than 50 presentations submitted covering a wide variety of subjects. From this group the committee took on the daunting task of selecting only 15 for our breakout sessions. As you can imagine, the decisions were tough and some very good presentations were not selected. The end result for you, the attendee, is the best conference ever!

This is ASPR’s first visit to Chicago for our conference; the location was a direct result of our membership surveys. Chicago is a location that can provide just about anything a visitor may desire. It is known as the nation’s “Second City” and has an abundance of activities available. I hope you all will take some time to visit the city, do some sightseeing, catch a ballgame, tour a museum, visit the world famous Navy Pier and take a cruise, etc. The list is way too long to include here, but the message is simple: in addition to a fantastic educational opportunity, there are many other reasons to attend.

I know there is additional information in this issue regarding the conference and I am sure it will provide all the data you will need. I will close this President’s Corner with a personal message. I have been a member of ASPR since inception and I have attended most of the 17 previous annual conferences. In addition to the educational experience of learning new approaches to recruiting, best practices utilized by others, being kept abreast of current trends and legal updates; I have found that equally important to my professional development is that each and every year I expand my network of colleagues across the country. This has proven invaluable over the years when I need to run a reference, ask a question, do a salary survey, etc. I also meet ASPR’s vendor partners/exhibitors with whom I have initiated business relationships that have stood the test of time.

It is an event I look forward to each year. I encourage each of you to attend if you can. If you do attend, please come by and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting as many of you personally as I can. As the song says, see you in “Sweet Home Chicago.”
