2013 ASPR Board of Directors Nominations and Elections

The ASPR Board of Directors elections are coming up! This year we will elect the President Elect, Treasurer and two Members at Large. The Members at Large positions that are up for election are the newly defined Vice President of Education and Vice President of Research. The terms for these positions will begin in August 2013 and end in May 2015. The reason for the term ending in May 2015 is due to the transition of the ASPR Annual Conference from August to May that year. The official transition of Board Members occurs at the ASPR Annual Business Meeting, which is held at the Annual Conference.

General Eligibility Requirements:
In order to be eligible for nomination and election to the ASPR Board, candidates must be ASPR members in the Individual Membership category and in good standing for a minimum of one year prior to the election. They must also be current active members on at least one ASPR Committee for at least 12 months prior to the Call for Nominations. Active committee participation is defined as attending 75% of the committee meetings (a waiver may be granted in recognition of contributions made outside of committee meetings for those who may not meet the 75% requirement). Board Members must be willing and able to travel (expenses reimbursed) to leadership meetings, the Annual Conference, attend monthly Board Meetings via phone, and carry out the duties and responsibilities delineated in the official job description.

Additional position-specific eligibility criteria must also be met due to the newly defined roles and responsibilities that resulted from the recent governance restructure:

President Elect:

  • ASPR member for a minimum of 3 years
  • Served on the ASPR Board of Directors or as a Committee Chair
  • Strong communication skills and ability to travel to represent ASPR at conferences
  • Fellowship certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher


  • Minimum 5 years of physician recruitment & management experience
  • Experience with development and implementation of strategic plans
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Knowledge of healthcare industry and current trends


  • ASPR member for a minimum of 3 years
  • Experience with organizational budgeting processes and financial management
  • Eligible to be bonded


  • Knowledge of financial investment management
  • Knowledgeable of accounting standards
  • Fellowship certification
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Served as a Board member or Committee Chair of ASPR or one of its Chapters

Board Member at Large – VP Education:

  • ASPR member for a minimum of 3 years
  • Experience planning educational programs such as conferences, webinars, etc.
  • Fellowship certification


  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Served as a Board member or Committee Chair of ASPR or one of its Chapters
  • Active membership in the ASPR Education Committee, Fellowship Committee, or Journal Committee

Board Member at Large – VP Research:

  • ASPR member for a minimum of 3 years


  • Active membership on the ASPR Benchmarking Committee
  • Experience with conducting surveys and compiling survey results
  • Experience researching industry topics
  • Published works
  • Knowledge of healthcare industry and current trends
  • Fellowship certification
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Served as a Board member or Committee Chair of ASPR or one of its Chapters

If a candidate meets all of the required eligibility criteria, the Board of Directors retains the right to reject a candidate’s nomination based on any ethical issues that have been reviewed or addressed within the prior 12 months by the Ethics Committee or Board of Directors.

Chat Re-Registration Required

The ASPR Chat listserv was turned off on Tuesday, February 5 in order to have all Chat users review and re-pledge to adhere to the Chat Code of Conduct. Re-registration will be required in order to gain access again to Chat.

Over the past year or so, the ASPR Board of Directors and Ethics Committee have become more knowledgeable regarding anti-trust issues as they relate to our listserv Chat. If you are a Chat user, you have likely noticed reminders that have been sent from time to time requesting that users refrain from discussing compensation and recruitment firm fee details, as sharing this type of information is a violation of federal anti-trust laws, the ASPR Anti-Trust Policy, and Chat Code of Conduct.

We have now received additional legal counsel related to anti-trust and have learned that all discussions related to any contractual details are also violations of anti-trust law. What do we mean by “contractual details”? Here are some examples (however, not an exhaustive list) of topics that are considered “contractual details” that cannot be discussed on the ASPR Chat listserv:

  • Provider compensation (specific numbers or ranges) – however, general models can be discussed (not yours specifically) and recommendations on national surveys may be given.

    • i.e.: We offer $XXX for primary care physicians – VIOLATION

  • Provider benefits including details (specific or general) on vacation time, CME time and dollar amounts, retirement benefits, stipends, relocation amounts, loan repayment amounts, etc.; you may not indicate what your compensation and benefits package details are in any form; even listing the benefits that are included in your package without including a quantity would be a violation of anti-trust law.

    • i.e.: We offer relocation assistance and a sign on bonus – VIOLATION

    • i.e.: We offer $XXX for CME and X days PTO – VIOLATION

  • Vendor fees/rates

    • i.e.: Firm ABC offers a rate of $XXX – VIOLATION

  • Vendor contract terms (such as period that a candidate “belongs” to a firm)

    • i.e.: We require our contracts to be limited to 12 months for the candidate “sunset clause” – VIOLATION

The language in the Chat Code of Conduct that references these rules is stated below:

  • Do not discuss salaries, prices, pricing strategies, restrictions on advertising, maintaining the profitability of a profession or industry, terms or conditions of sale, minimizing discounts, gifts or promotions, profits, profit margins, cost data, market share, sales territories, customers or selection, rejection, or termination of customers or suppliers (per the ASPR Anti-Trust Policy).

Anti-Trust is a federal law. Violating anti-trust law on the ASPR Chat listserv puts you, your employer, and ASPR at risk for CRIMINAL and/or CIVIL litigation. In order to protect our members and our organization, the ASPR Chat has been closed down and we are requiring all Chat users to re-register for Chat privileges. In order to re-register (or register for the first time), please complete the online Chat Application Form. Your privileges will be reactivated within two business days if you register within the next two weeks. If you register after the next two weeks, your privileges will be reactivated on the Friday of the week you complete the form.

The ASPR Board of Directors wants the ASPR Chat listserv to continue to be a valuable resource. By taking this step, we can ensure that ALL Chat users are fully educated on and compliant with the ASPR policies including the Chat Code of Conduct and the Anti-Trust Policy.

If a Chat user violates any of the stipulations of the Chat Code of Conduct or Anti-Trust Policy, the following disciplinary actions may be taken by the ASPR Ethics Committee (AEC):

First Offense:

Written reminder of Policy

Second Offense:

Written warning with notification that further violations may result in suspension of privileges or membership.

Third Offense:

Immediate suspension of privileges or membership for a period of no less than six months. Member may apply, in writing, to the AEC for reinstatement after six months. Reinstatement will be at the discretion of the AEC.

Have Questions about Participating in the Benchmarking Survey?

The 2013 ASPR In-House Physician Recruitment Benchmarking Survey is open through the end of March. The Benchmarking Survey will collect 2012 recruitment data from in-house physician recruiters from across the country. All participants will receive the final report and an Organizational Benchmarking Report, and access to the searchable data for free.

Many physician recruiters have questions about the survey, so ASPR has set up a couple of options for you to ask questions. You may submit your questions via the ASPR Benchmarking Survey Q&A Form and your questions will be answered via email. You can also call the Benchmarking Survey Help Line every Wednesday from 2:00-2:30 p.m. EST throughout the survey cycle. Just call 866-394-4146 and use the Passcode: 76151010#.

Here is a recent question and answer that might be helpful to you.
Question: I recruit for both employed practices and private practices with demonstrated community need. Should I include my expenses for just my employed practices or for all searches that I conducted throughout the year?

Answer: You should include all expenses that your organization incurs for physician recruitment regardless of whether it is for an employed group or a private practice. If it is an expense that your organization incurred related to provider recruitment, you should include it in your expenses.

CE and Fellowship Certificates Available in My ASPR

Tracking your Continuing Education credits? Need a certificate for your CE? Any educational programs offered by ASPR that you’ve attended are now all tracked in your My ASPR profile. Not only do you have access to a full listing of your ASPR CE programs in your profile, you can also print CE Certificates for the programs you attended.

In addition to being able to track CE and print CE certificates for the ASPR Annual Conference and ASPR Monthly Webinar Series, you will now also be able to print your Associate and Diplomate certificates for the Fellowship Program. The Fellow Certificate will continue to be mailed to members who complete the Certification program, but the Associate and Diplomate certificates are only available by downloading them from your My ASPR profile.

CE certificates will be available within two business days of the conference or webinar that you attend. Fellowship certificates will be available within one month of passing your exam.
